SCENE | Houston, TX.

I'm headed to Houston for a super-quick last minute trip and wondered if any Houstonians out there had some recs for eats, drinks, sees. I've got a pretty good short list so far, but always appreciate some native intel. Thanks y'all!

Check out Dak and Bop while you're there--Korean fried chicken and craft beers! And if you have time to shop, Myth & Symbol is a cute place with great owners.

The Houston food and Cocktail scene is a BOOM TOWN right now..I have been gone from several years overseas, but these are some high quality places that are owned by my friends or high on their Instagram feeds these days.. There is SO much to taste and discover, I love going back and visitng. A few of my favoritews are: Double Trouble for relaxed coffee or cocktails, Mala Sichuan has a new outpost in Montrose, Pax Americana is divine and always a treat! Or go for a Bahn Mi and a Vietnamese iced coffee at Thien An- classic Houston fare!

Check out the Shadow Project at the MFA (which happens to make locally made sculptural speakers by my friends at Steamboat Ampworks!)

Have fun, hope you blog about one of my favorite cities.

Dak and Bop is excellent food, but I wouldn't plan a visit on a short trip. Unfortunately, after multiple visits, the food still takes a long time to arrive after ordering. To the tune of nearly 2 hours one time... which is a shame.

I agree with the Double Trouble recommendation if you're along the rail line, but you'll have plenty of casual cocktail/beer bar options assuming you're staying inside the Loop.

My food recommendation, if you can squeeze in a reservation, would be Oxheart. Other than that, definitely try our Vietnamese food and, and yeah, our Tex Mex. Personally, I'd recommend Hugo's, Pico's, or Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen.

As a resident for 6 years

Moon Tower in the third ward. Beer garden with the Best Best hot dogs and burgers I'be ever had.

Or Brasil in Montrose.

Bars: Voodoo Queen in the third ward. Also if you are into real dive bars, Notsouh (houston backwards) in downtown. Totally illegal speakeasy and out of place in the gentrifying downtown. After closing there is the upstairs bar. Knock on the door and answer a couple questions.

If you are close to Rice University which is an oasis in the medical district, go to Black Hole Cafe and also Valhalla (grad student bar) on campus. Don't feed the squirrels...

If you want to go somewhere unique go to the Orange Show

If you want affordable cowboy boots, go to Texas Junk (open Fridays??). Hundreds of them for less then $100 usually.

If you want to go to a great outdoor bar with a great taco truck next door go to West Alabama Ice House

Hi lizzie, do you need a tour guide? There is so much to see here, but there are a few shining stars run by truly inspiring people that are not to be missed. I'm a green coffee buyer and am lucky enough to work with folks in the local food + drink scene that I think you would really dig. I was blown away by this city's candor when I moved here a few years ago. Shoot me an email at jlisetts@gmail.com and I'd be happy to show you around a bit. - Jamie Isetts

I just saw your guide to Houston over on The Reed and it's wonderfully on point. Next time you're in town, drop by my lovely alma mater Rice and check out the James Turrell skyspace!

Well, I'm not sure about Houston, but I can tell you that I managed to discover some great places in San Francisco. Have you been there? I was really impressed with san-francisco food tour, and I highly recommend you check out something like that next time you'll be on a trip, gastronomic tours are great.
